Extra! Extra! "THE GIN GAME" TAKES FIRST PLACE AT OCTAFEST!!Actors Honored As Well Every year the Oklahoma Community Theatre Association - OCTA - holds the state festival of plays. The event features one-act plays from around the state, competing to be named the best in the state and for the opportunity to represent Oklahoma in the regional competition. This year, the festival was held July 28-August 1 in the Nancy O'Brien Center for the Performing Arts in Norman and this year the BACP sent actors Tom Berenson and Karyn Maio, along with director Martha Cherbini and crew members Bob and Joni Papisan to the festival to present "The Gin Game," the Pulitzer Prize winning tragi-comedy by D. L. Coburn. Their talents and hard work were rewarded when "The Gin Game" was named the first place winner, as well as the winner of the Standing Ovation (Crowd Pleaser) Award. This award is voted on by non-participants who see all the plays in the competition and then vote for their favorite. In addition to these awards, the two actors - Tom and Karyn - received Outstanding Actor awards and were named to the All-State Cast. "The Gin Game" was originally staged at the Broken Arrow Community Playhouse in April 2009. The play uses a game of cards as a metaphor to examine issues of relationships, family, and aging in America. It was produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc. BACP PRESIDENT ISSUES CHALLENGE FOR YOUTH THEATRE The BACP is planning something big for next summer and everyone is invited to help make it happen! Plans are underway for a BACP Summer Youth Theatre Camp for the summer of 2011. The camp will provide area youth, ages 12-18 with a unique opportunity to work with accomplished artists to learn about the theatre arts. In this four-week theater camp the students will learn theatre basics, how to build sets, and the basics of technical skills necessary to put on a production, work on musical skills and audition techniques. Family members and friends will be invited to a showcase performance at the end of the camp. The BACP board hopes to raise enough funds through individual donations and grants to be able to offer this camp free of charge to 60 area youth. To meet the ambitious goal of funding the approximately $15,000 needed to offer the camp for free, fundraising has begun in earnest with a challenge issued by Board President Curt Bradshaw. He is challenging other board members and theatre enthusiasts to meet his $100 pledge. To date, $400 have been pledged from private donors and the BACP board would like to extend a BIG Thank You to Arkansas Valley State Bank for their pledge of $500! Anyone interested in supporting this endeavor can make a tax deductible donation to the BACP indicating they would like to support Summer Youth Camp 2011. For more information, contact Sherry at the BACP Box Office, 258-0077. BACP HAS A THEATRE COORDINATOR In an effort to better serve our patrons and be more efficient with our resources, the BACP recently hired a Theatre Coordinator. You may not see much of him, but Jimmy Pike will be on duty beginning July 1, behind the scenes organizing our resources, coordinating set builds and strikes, recruiting volunteers and much more. When he isn't behind the scenes, he will be available to visit with local civic and church groups to talk about how they can help support the BACP - by buying tickets or by making donations to help with the production costs of each show. To invite him to come speak to your group, call the BACP Box Office at 258-0077 and leave him a message. He'd love to meet you. WE'RE HAVING A PARTY!! AND IT'S NEVER TOO LATE NOT TO ATTEND!! The Broken Arrow Community Playhouse is having a "Make Believe Party" and you can still NOT attend whenever you want. Click here for your invitation: Make Believe Invitation. Then follow the instructions and send your contribution to: Broken Arrow Community Playhouse P.O. Box 452 Broken Arrow, OK 74013 Let There Be Light - PLEASE!! The Broken Arrow Community Playhouse wants the audience to be able to see its productions. Lights are a big part of this, so the BACP is seeking donors to help purchase new lights to replace the ones that keep burning out. Anyone interested in contributing can contact the BACP office at 258-0077. NEW BOARD MEMBERS ELECTED AT ANNUAL MEETING Four new board members were elected to 3-year terms on the BACP board at the annual meeting April 13. Four other board members who were appointed to 3-year terms in the past year were confirmed by a vote, and two other board members were elected to their second 3-year terms. The newest board members are Alice Barron, Teresa Bringle, Jeff Hoffman and Scott Lewis. Those confirmed to their 3-year terms included Sue Ellis, Bob Papisan, Seth Phillips and Lori Timmons. And the returning board members are Karyn Maio and Alannah Wade. The proposed bylaws change was approved. It removed the phrase “sharing the same residence” from Article II, Section 8, which formerly read: “Any person shall be eligible for election as a Board Member, except that no two members of the same family sharing the same residence shall serve concurrently.” CHECKOUT OUR LATEST NEWSLETTER ON-LINE!! VOLUNTEERS HONORED The Broken Arrow Community Playhouse celebrated the beginning of its 30th season with a gala extravaganza for its season subscribers and a time of honoring five special volunteers. The Hall of Fame Award, which is given to to someone who has given more than 5 years of service to the playhouse, who has given time and/or money to help advance playhouse projects and objectives, was presented to our box office manager Sherry Hacker. The Special Recognition Award is presented to someone who has gone out of their during the past season, or the past couple of seasons or perhaps even longer than that, someone who says yes whenever they are asked to help out and who doesn’t do it for the glory. They do it because they love theatre and they are willing to do whatever it takes to make our theatre successful. This year's awardee was our costume shop manager Marnie Smith. The Plumb Award, which is given to someone who has done outstanding work in the area of technical theatre, who has given more than 3 years of service to the playhouse, has gone above and beyond the call of duty in helping to advance playhouse objectives, has freely given countless hours of service to the playhouse and far exceeds the standards of “average” volunteer, was presented to our former Production Manager Bruce Webb. The Alyssa Godbey Young Performer Award is presented to a young actor or actress under the age of 21, who has turned in at least one exceptional performance in a BACP production in the previous season. It was first awarded in 1999 of as a way of remembering, Alyssa Godbey, a young actress who appeared on the BACP stage and who many thought would "go all the way" but her life was cut short by a car accident. The award was also a way of encouraging a young performer to continue to pursue their dream of acting. This year's winner was David Nold who portrayed Ralphie in last season's "A Christmas Story." The president’s award, as you may have guessed, is selected by the president. It gives the president the opportunity to recognize not only a great volunteer but someone who has directly helped during the president’s tenure. That person may be someone that has been at the playhouse since the beginning or it may be someone who did something above and beyond the call of duty the past season. This year the award went to Marla Taylor - past board president and current board member. BACP Costume Has It's Own Blog! CHECK IT OUT!!
